Will add more info but Allan Bennett was killed in the second German line during the night while trying to rescue a private Green who had been shot and was lying injured in a shell crater. As he pulled the Green out Allan was shot, it is believed he lived through the night but had to be left behind as the Germans pushed forward the next morning.

Thanks again. Peter Thomson is the great nephew (I think). He is on the NIng and he has done a lot of research on Allan. I am sure he will be keeping an eye out for any extra info.

A quick clarification. L/Cpl Allan Bennett along with Pte Percy Allengame was attempting to rescue Corporal Green who appeared to have been injured by shrapnel from the shelling. In the process, it appears that Bennett and Allengame were hit by machinegun fire. Allengame was killed and Allan Bennett either made it on his own or was helped forward to the taken German trench (which was then a safer place than No Mans Land that was under heavy machinegun fire and shelling). Green and Bennett were left mortally wounded but alive and lying next to each other in the German trench when the withdrawal was called (Green had subsequently been helped forward to this location by other soldiers). Bennett and Green enlisted at the same time at Blackboy Hilll in WA, in July 1915, and were presumably closely linked thereafter. It seems that they also fought and died together, even buried together, as Cpl Green's remains have also been identified in the Fromelles burials.
Thanks Peter. Steve and I were just talking about this.
